This is the Jackfork Formation created by the foothills of the Ouachita mountains touching the Arkansas River. This sandstone outcropping is estimated to be between 300 and 320 million years old. It is where Benard de la Harpe developed a small trading post in 1722 which eventually became Little Rock!

The Capital Buildings:
There are two, and since you’re already downtown, you might as well check them out. The Old Capital building is now a museum. The newer one is very similar in appearance to the nation’s capital building in DC. Tours are given regularly. The doors open at 9 AM.
The Quapaw Quarter:
When you’re viewing the Governor’s Mansion, you are in what is known as the Quapaw Quarter. It is a nine square mile area that is comprised by some of the most historic and culturally significant buildings in Little Rock. The buildings have been maintained and renovated to reflect their original forms. Just drive around and develop an appreciation for the times of yesteryear when Little Rock was just a small community.
